Control Center: Viruses, and Wasted Time

I've decided that Flickr is becoming a dangerous place. For whatever reason, I get offered more viruses and malware at Flickr than any other place at the moment. Late Thursday night (maybe early Friday morning) while looking for a photo on Flickr to use with a blog I screwed up and clicked the wrong thing. The next morning I got up and found my laptop hijacked by the a trojan called the Control Center Virus. Instead of Windows, I got a control panel that told me the two ro three dozen things wrong with my computer. Kinf of ruined the taste of my coffee.

Fortunately I have an abundance of computer resources in the house. I got on another laptop, figured out what I had, and found a nice guide to removing it at Im-Infected.

Friday evening at got to work on removing the virus. I burnt several CD's trying to boot from that drive. Nothing worked. I finally figured out that Ctrl-Alt-Del still got me the task manager and allowed me to run new tasks (like the rkill DOS application that closed the Control Center).

I loaded Malware Bytes and ran a full scan, which took a couple of hours. And, wallah, I had my laptop back. But I lost six or so hours of my life.

Digg Starts Making Money

NightRPStar

BusinessWeek ran a piece late last month on the link sharing site Digg, and how it has suddenly figured out how to make a profit.

Advertising pays for most things in media. Whether it's broadcast television, radio, cable or the Internet, most pay-for-content models have failed. It ends up being the audience and not the content that's for sale. Attract a big audience and you have something to peddle to advertisers. Just selling content, by itslef, works for music at Amazon and iTunes - but not for much else.

Digg has discovered something fascinating. I like to call it contextualization. Everybody's on to the advertising thing. It's no secret. Most Internet audiences realize they're doing you a favor by reading your stuff. They feel entitled to free content. BY reading it, they validate you. Those readers see ads, and they kind of resent them.

Digg found a way to may advertising look more like content. Readers see the ads and feel more comfortable with them. Click-thru rates are up, and Digg's making money.

So now the rest of the world is chasing its tail, trying to figure out how to contextulize their advertising and make it more comfortable.

Your URL Shortener is Slowing Down the Web

I knew that URL shorteners were somehow evil; now I have proof...

TechCrunch reported today that URL shorteners slow down the web. Some more than others.

URL shorteners have been around for a while. TiyURL was the first such service, started in 2002. Since then there's been bit.ly, tr.im, and a dozen or more other URL shorteners. And the services has become something of a signature or branding device for major web services. So there is a Google URL shortener, a YouTube URL shortener, a Facebook URL shortener, etc.

The TechCrunch piece looked at the question of URL shortener speed and found that some of them slow down your movement on the web quite significantly. Others are not some bad. Check out the TechCrunch article to see which ones are any good.

Eye Tracking Software: Are You Ready for a Tablet that Can Read Your Mind?

Through TechCrunch and CrunchGear I recently learned about a software package called Text 2.0 in the works that would track your eye movements as you look at a tablet PC screen and respond to those movements. Interactive computing without touch. Watch the video....

As an educator (I'm certified in both reading and in learning disabilities), the implications for such software made my head swim. It offers some interesting possibilities as an assistive technology for people with disabilities. But it could also speed up changes in the nature of literacy (what it means to be a reader in our society). Educators generally struggle at the moment with some of those implications.

The real implications of the technology, though, hit me when I found reference to it at a online dating blog. The blogger talked about how a dating website could maybe someday use eye tracking software to draw conclusions about what you like and dislike on the profiles you're looking at. And, well, the eyes are a window to the soul, right? The privacy implications began streaming through my mind.

Software that might possibly be able to draw somewhat valid conclusions about what I'm thinking when I look at a web page... Do we really want that? Do we want Google, Facebook, etc. building a database on us based on our eye movements? Makes me want to go re-read my copy of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World...

Web 3.0: The Semantic Web

The May issue of Learning and Leading ( a publication of ISTE, the International Society for Technology in Education has a excellent article on the semantic web - which is sometimes referred to as Web 3.0.

The ISTE piece did something I haven't seen done before. Instead of talking about this or that small aspect of Web 3.0 (or talking to you as though you already fully understood what Web 3.0 will be), it created a historical perspective that helped you understand where the Web is going.

When the Internet first started it was about publishing documents. People put up more or less static pages for others to read. It was a great thing because suddenly there was a great deal more to read - and you got to read things on the Web that you might have otherwise never seen. Static.

Then one day someone had the bright idea of letting readers comment on what they'd just read. Next they started letting the average Joe write their own blogs, then publish their own videos on YouTube, edit web encyclopedias, put interactive forums up - and just as suddenly the content of the Web began to be generated and created by a much broader cross section of Web users. We called it Web 2.0.

One result was pop culture overload. The top picks in Google are there because they're popular - not because they're accurate. And as sophisticated as Google's algorithms may be, the massive hoard of information and data out there means that Google's best algorithms resemble some early precursor to the Dewey Decimal System.

The Semantic Web is an effort to tag information (including images) so that it can be more meaningfully searched - and we can move beyond what's popular, making it easier to find what's important...

The Growth of Crowdsourcing

James Cridland

I learned a new word this week: Micro-volunteering. The idea is simple enough. Next time you're stuck in a traffic jam, stuck sitting in your dentist's waiting room, standing around during that 25-minute wait for a table at your favorite restaurant, or just plain bored, open up your iPhone or your Blackberry and spend a little time volunteering online. YOu can put your time that might otherwise be wasted to good use by performing small tasks for non-profit companies over the Internet.

That's just one new take on crowdsourcing. The idea fo crowdsourcing has been around for a while. Wikipedia is the poster child for crowdsourcing. They've build their free online encyclopedia with the help of volunteers (the crowd) who write their articles for free. Wikipedia has been around since 2001. It wasn't until 2006 that someone came up with a word for what they were doing: Jeff Howe coined the term crowdsourcing then.

In the past few weeks I've seen crowdsourcing applied to a number of topics and problems: from helping the Republicans form a new political agenda to studying honey bees in California.

If Web 2.0 is about using the Internet collaborative and allowing Internet users to create content, crowdsourcing is fast becoming a driving force. It may take over journalism and the news industry, and it is becoming both a business model and a management tool for entrepreneurs.

Crowdsourcing is here to stay.

Augmented Reality: Changing How We See the World

My friend Scott McLeod pointed out this video on augmented reality on his blog a few days ago.

I haven't tinkered much with augmented reality before now. But it is easy to see the implications of it in a huge number of areas - including education (my own profession).

Will augmented reality eventually become commonplace? Will the kids in my classes at school all have glasses (or even contact lenses) that allow them to overlay data on top of what they see me doing in front of them (not that lecture is a very big part of teacher in the elementary grades anymore)? Will the windshield of my car have augmented reality built into it - sort of a sophisticated version of a Garman or a Tom Tom? Maybe... Time will tell.

Registering your Startup

The whole idea of registering a business sounds more obligatory than important? If your answer to the question is yes, then its time to change your outlook and here is why:

The process of registration compels you to think about the basic issues that are included in your business plan. Don’t mistake the registration process to be a formal obligation and avoid rushing into it. Matters such as trademark disputes, legal snags, costly name changes or tax problems may come up later if you don’t take seriously. Be inquisitive, work around it and give your 100 percent when it comes to registering any business.

A few points to keep in mind;

1. Beware of trademark issues – will somebody sue you for using that name? Check availability of domain names, consult registries etc.

2. Choose your structure – you need to declare your business/startup in form of an entity (sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation or limited liability company)

3. Obtain Tax ids

4. File registration/Permits – The government will keep a track of businesses and tax through this. You need to pay fee and fulfill certain jurisdiction procedures.

5. Some businesses have additional requirements like planning, regulatory agencies or professional agencies.

Try adding value to the venture buy researching all around the process.

For more detail on this matter, we suggest you visit this post

Exit Strategies for Startups

A heated debate is taking place around Foursquare considering a sale to Yahoo. It is believed that Foursquare is in the midst of an aggressive courtship on behalf of Yahoo, who is willing to pay as much as $125 million for the year old startup. Some are freaking out asking Foursquare ‘not to sell’ and the gurus are speculating that Foursquare is trying to push its valuation higher than what Yahoo is offering. What Foursquare does, only time with tell, but this has definitely made me think about ‘exit strategies’ for startups and the importance of having one.

When you are starting up or as you form strategies and plans to grow your startup, you need to think about an exit strategy. Will you establish a lifestyle business that generates income without plans of selling it in the future, or will you build equity in a business that you will convert into cash? Depending on your goal, the business you choose and the way you decide to grow it should be aligned with the end-game objectives. The common exit strategies are; sale, mergers, IPO, buyout or liquidation of assets.

Some may not find laying too much importance of exit strategies as correct, arguing that you will never want to build something by always having a motive of leaving. But whether you want to move on to you next entrepreneurship venture or whether you stick to a business plan for a long time, it is important to have a succession plan in place for your startup.

We suggest you read this post at ReadWriteWeb for more information.

While the idea of an exit strategy might sound negative, crafting one can help you plan how to make the most out of a good situation, not simply escape a bad one

Option Pool Shuffling for Startups

Option pool can be described as the amount of a startup’s common stock reserved for employees, directors, advisors, and consultants. The stock reserved is then issued to the aforementioned stakeholders. It is through a written plan a startup pre-authorizes the amount of the company’s common stock which will be issued by the administrator (usually the startup’s board of directors or a committee selected by the board). A startup, for example, can have 5,000,000 shares of common stock but only elect to authorize 2,000,000 shares.

A startup’s original option pool may not likely turn out to be the last option pool the startup creates. The size of the pool should be discussed at each round of funding and financing, since at that time, the startup might need more equity options to attract and motivate future hiring.

The confusing part of an option pool is how the option pool’s non-issued or unissued portion is treated.

We suggest you read this post for a detailed insight into Option Pool Shuffling

Summary: Don’t let your investors determine the size of the option pool for you. Use a hiring plan to justify a small option pool, increase your share price, and increase your effective valuation.

E-mail Pitching

All of us know that face-to-face interactions though preferable, are not always possible. Therefore one goes for ‘email pitching’ – the written form of pitch.Investors are overloaded with a huge array of emails and to get their attention you should craft your email in such a way that you hold the interest of the reader.

Be sure that you make the same effort with an e-mail that you would in a face-to-face meeting. E-mail pitches should be formal and professional.

Below are some tips for writing a pitch letter via email;

1. Understand your audience and make sure you know who the recipient is

2. Include pictures and images to make it more visually attractive. Don’t forget file size limitations though

3. Have a signature with all possible information – email, Twitter account, Skype name etc.

4. Be precise in your emails. Emphasize on meeting up and follow up comments.

For more insight to this matter, have a look at this post on RWW.

attachments like resumes and press releases are sometimes appropriate; you should give a quick introduction to yourself at the beginning of an email.

Startup Advice for Entrepreneurs

These points may come across as basic, but these are the small points one should keep in mind when launching a startup;

1.Start by thinking small and extend your thinking from there. Small and simple thinking will allow you to concentrate on what is important

2.Higher good coders/technical people in every department 3.Financial reward is good, but aspiring entrepreneurs should first look out for opportunities where thy can learn. Allow employees to take on projects even if they don’t have the qualifications.

4.Don’t manage profit, but cash flow. Money in and money out should be the only two financial yardsticks that matter.

5.Perfection is the enemy of success (incase of startups). Speed is better than perfection.

6.Sell, sell and sell. Selling to everyone including business world, employees and suppliers. Sell yourself, sell your product, have a sales professional in your team.

7.Start NOW. Don’t wait.

Quick Tips on Raising Startup Funding

1.Communicate your Leverage Point

Let people know what you can do ‘differently’. Entrepreneurs should talk about their capital efficiency. Probably you are doing some work cheaper than others or you have access to a group of customers – think of any leverage point you have and flaunt it.

2.Communicate through a story

People find stories interesting and exciting. There was this problem and I thought this product would be perfect. Know more about the idea and your product and have a good story with it.

3.Accept that your Startup may have flaws

Every startup has one issue or the other in the early days and accept these issues. Don’t spend time convincing others why your startup is like this or like that. Spend that energy in explaining what your startup may grow up as.

4.Plan Small and Dream Big

In the early days you can’t be extravagant and you need to explain this to be funded properly.

We suggest you read this post at OnStartups for more insight to the topic

Even though I know an idea is likely going to take more cash than the entrepreneur things, I prefer backing people that believe they can do it with little cash and try to do so.  As Josh said, learn to fail cheaper
