Russian users of suspect Google of spying

I know these days all more or less tech-savvy Internet users will have at least a slight suspicion, probably a little too much about you know Google. And it is not surprising, since our dependence on different Google services and tools. Last time of my husband crashed computer, (when it is updating new computer using Lenovo upgrade program from Vista to Windows 7 on its) left him with an ideal impersonal hard drive without a single document or photo, he was not the least concern over - and it is not surprising: all his emails in Gmail and documents in Google Docs so why worry?

And since I'm more paranoid than most people I know about Google, I am kinda worried about how much Google want to use the knowledge one day actually know about me - and how the company. But conspiracy theory or not, it's quite another when users begin to suspect that Google actually - espionage is in the way, usually CIA and reserved similar ist.Und espionage against the country, even by many as a potential enemy in the United States, especially since it is obvious that Google has all reasons to support the United States in what problems of the country could be before international.

Today I read a post in the most popular Russian technology community where the author claims that Google Maps service seems some voyeuristic thrill in the direction of strategic and military objects in Russia - borders and nuclear warhead to save demonstrieren.Und the author shares actually a whole bunch of screenshots, where such strategic objects with high resolution - turned and very recently updated. At the same time similar objects in the United States are either completely hidden or have not been updated for years.

The author quoted (and demonstrates) quite a number of cases where such strategic objects in detail displayed werden.Und the most curious thing is that nearby towns and villages of equal interest to the satellites that make the shots seem not instead you such strategic objects seem especially without attention aim to whats it close.

It is a known fact, Google does not actually using aerial photographs deal - buy instead of you photos for their services by Dritten.Und obviously more interested in the Russian border and rockets than in small villages in Siberia - could have such third parties, so Google is not the fault for the actual spying only for the choice of materials, to present the general public.

But of course while as a Russian citizen I feel happy to know that someone has access to information about Russian military system - whether foreign intelligence services or terrorists - I definitely understand that it not only Google or their vendors to blame we should understand ist.stattdessen, do not believe that the Russian authorities and respond properly - I should like Google asking hide these areas from public view that actually does Google for others on request kontaktieren.Und without such proper use of information technology, they still claim in this country we are sure.

Bureaucrats now have a social network of their own Russia

It's pretty obvious that the social networking boom has led in in recent years abundance of social networks probably covering all the niches of the company. It's pretty obvious that in some countries (such as Russia where I live) this process takes longer than it have in the United States since all trends here happen with a significant delay. During the US social networks for everything already has in Russia yet another novelty - a social network, we specifically determined witness for State officials.

The social network is immediately named Gosbook (being part of the Russian word "Gos", which stands for 'State'), has a proud 'beta'-tag in the logo, and has all the features we have come to expect from a social network – user profile, blogs, groups, and friends to keep colleagues here at a generally more official tone of the site.

While typically all that is developed by request of a State or regional authorities in the country - overpriced will tend to corruption is a huge problem in Russia I did not expect that officials will really want to discuss online or offline. For some this project is not an expensive: it took only about $30 thousand in development and probably in marketing and PR, like all the Russian blogs and TV networks are just glad a story about the social network for civil servants - especially the official a mark, who said the President Medvedev must be supported.

The target group for the project you want to be the bureaucrats to care deeply about the future of the country and want to participate in discussions on various topics that are available. Users of the social network can participate, different groups based on the specific agencies you belong to. You can also participate in discussions, but for now the discussions seem not at all active and have a maximum of 5 participants - for the absurd themes where the topic would like to add everyone probably your 2 cents on how absurd.

The interesting part about the social network is not some invite it to in the website where you show some work for government agencies be able to sign up to.Can in fact in the discussions someone admits a request a bio with valid data enter and - if they approved by the Administration Web site - participate.True status on the site include new or experts and users will be able to participate in the site scope allowed by its specific Rechte.Aber as well always the project has a chance to criticize still another platform for ordinary citizens, the authorities and their opinions (some), provided that the bureaucrats do and actually want to hear public view, I am not sure I want to believe.

But the most important question that now want to Internet users and TV reporters questions is exactly when officials to participate in this social network by your blogs or comments in the Gemeinden.Es is pretty obvious that you have a lot of other regular activities in their offices and given as Russia now living, I feel that not enough time for these direct responsibility haben.Und if you now start chat in the social network instead of the performance of their duties, people in the country you excited about this new initiative be no reasons.

How many Twitter accounts is to have your President?

A President of a country can be considered definitely open-minded and tech-aware progressive person when he or she has a Twitter account. Finally, it is the hottest way to connect online these days with citizens. But what if a President has actually as many as two Twitter accounts? I really don't know, but I have a feeling that the Russian President Medvedev its online activities sometimes exaggerate is.

He is extremely active online with a video blog, a Twitter account and his regular communication with people online.Aber now is he thinks it is still not enough: his Twitter account is already too personally grown so he tightly official this time add a new - is!

In fact, keeping all followers Medvedev is actually his account in a personal MedvedevRussia going rename and next you create a new one (still named KremlinRussia) serve as an official outlet for President messages. And the one that currently exists and has more than 120 thousand followers continue to be a place for personal comments and opinions of the President.

This sounds sensible because current subscribers because accustomed to the unofficial voice of the President it are grown and new followers from scratch now always will.Obviously, the President does not actually deal will have to with multi account Twitter client: it is only reasonable that its official account is maintained by his administration, while it one updates itself only personal comments and photos will be.

The entire project looks like a complicated multi-stage procedure to me: right, now I can see that both accounts exist on Twitter, but MedvedevRussia protected updates so before renaming KremlinRussia using this ID, it renamed first, the URL available to machen.Und I can not help, but if some sophisticated hackers are able to control over the URL to get me question before it is again claimed by the President? The second account is promised to start, update as soon as next week, so this procedure in the next days implemented are.

The reason for moving is explained as follows: If the account was initially created, the potential for Twitter in Russia was not clear and it was impossible to predict, the extremely rapid growth and things are more or less clearly the popularity of the online service under the Russian Bürgern.Jetzt, and it is obvious that official source of information on activities of the President is required in addition to the informal communication.

This will also make life easier for Medvedev as a real person after he comes back - he is still a personal Twitter account, he can use (or at least I think so) for what whatever role in life, which he then wählt.Und being a account with a huge amount of followers already!

Traditional media can help some big tech problems but keep silence fix

Do you believe in the power of social media? Of course you do if you are reading this post now because people who read this blog are mostly related to the online crowd in this way or another. But the truth is that the mainstream media still make more difference when it comes to promoting a product (even if it is an online service like Twitter) or turning an online celebrity into a world-famous personality that everyone talks about.

Clever PR people do know about the power of social media and they do have bloggers on their distribution lists so that they could send the press releases to the relevant blogs to reach the online audience with the voices of respected bloggers that their readers frequently trust more than some TV anchor who is not even presenting their own opinion and instead often relies 100% on impersonal editors.

But does that mean that these very PR people have removed journalists working in traditional media (both print and TV) from their distribution lists? Of course not: these contacts are still the most valuable and a PR agency that can get a product to a national TV show or New York Times will definitely enjoy a substantial success and appreciation from their customers. The reason is simple: traditional media is still way more powerful than social media in reaching mainstream audience and it is definitely the mainstream audience that represents a huge market while in social media you can usually only reach early adopters with your products.

Of course it is obvious that many companies want to employ this power of traditional media for their purposes and build a strong demand for their products and services. Traditional media is also great in delivering news to the vast majority of the population: while some people do want to get their news faster than anyone else on Twitter, most are quite happy with getting to know what happens in the world from their traditional evening news without browsing any news sites on purpose. And given the close contact of traditional media with people, there’s one thing that I can hardly understand: why is it that the traditional media does nothing to solve some of the worst technical problems?

Have you ever visited a friend or a family and happened to turn their pretty old desktop on to maybe check your email or show them how to use Flickr to upload their family photos for everyone to see immediately instead of having to arrange for special family gatherings with the single purpose of watching photos from their last vacation? If yes, I am quite certain you have frequently seen Internet Explorer 6 as a default browser on such computers – and could not help but advise an upgrade because this is hardly a secure browser any more.

Of course if you went on to actually upgrade the browser yourself, I am quite certain your friends or family are now running a later version of IE or most probably the latest version of Firefox instead of that outdated browser. And this was a good thing to do because you have helped make the online world more secure. But what if you decided to simply offer your advice without actually implementing the update? Chances are the computer still runs the same outdated browser at least for two simple reasons: the owners hardly realize the dangers involved and probably don’t even know how to actually implement the update you suggested.

I guess no one will doubt these days that the sixth version of Internet Explorer can hardly be recommended to use due to numerous security flaws that have been fixed in later versions of the Microsoft’s browser. And the topics of this or that flaw that can affect security in a certain manner are frequently visible on Twitter or on news sites like Digg – because people online do pay attention to the problem and try to educate those around us.

And traditional media does not fully ignore the browsing problems: I am quite certain you frequently hear stories about Microsoft and their monopoly in browsers and European Union demanding the company to offer a user a choice of the browser to use. Yet I have never heard anything about how insecure Internet Explorer is though it could definitely be turned into a story quite easily: just discuss the latest malware taking advantage of some flaw, point out that the only way to a more secure online experience is using an up-to-date browser and explain how easy such an update can be executed (and probably demonstrate exactly how). What could be simpler than that? I know that this may not be as exciting as yet another report from a European court but is it not useful? I have a feeling that it definitely is so why not pay a little attention to it now and then to eventually ensure IE 6 market share drops to virtually nothing?

Another problem I can see is that mainstream media does not really promote legal content consumption as opposed to piracy. Everyone knows that piracy is a huge problem for content producers but I have a feeling that TV and print editors do little to tell people exactly why it is a bad idea to simply download a movie for free and what legal alternatives exist. Instead, we keep listening to various stories about The Pirate Bay and its endless (and seemingly unfair) persecution and some individuals facing multi-million charges for a single song downloaded illegally. Do these stories really make people go and buy their digital music and movies? Unfortunately I have a feeling that they only teach people the names of the websites they should go to if they want some free content – all the while hating the crazy music labels for acting stupid like this.

I know that these stories are news and people want to know about them but why not add something different, something that promotes understanding of why content cannot be free and where it can be consumed legally and at a reasonable price? I know that in the US there are household brands like iTunes or Hulu that most people are familiar with and when they realize that they are willing to pay for their content, they will head to these well-known destinations and make a payment. But for example here in Russia it is really way easier to download a movie, an album or a book for free from torrent (their names are also very frequently in the news due to the ever-lasting conflicts with copyright owners) than buy or rent it to consume legally. Believe me, it is quite a challenge to find a website where you would be able to pay for your content to own it legally while finding a torrent to download the same movie or book is way easier to do. So tell me why these websites are not promoted on TV additionally?

And there are definitely other issues that deserve attention from the mainstream media and that could have really been improved if some TV networks or talk shows chose to participate and contribute to improving the situation. Of course one of such issues is parental control. It is no secret that the vast majority of parents of teenagers are not tech-aware enough to realize all the dangers posed by the internet – let alone to implement any solutions that could help them monitor their children’s activities online and protect them from the numerous risks.

Obviously the first step that should be involved here is promoting understanding of importance of such control: just explaining the dangers and availability of the tools that will make the process actually work and point to some solutions available. If the problem is discussed again and again, more parents will realize that they actually need to do something and finally overcome their lack of technical skills and implement some sort of a solution in their family.

All in all, I have a feeling that there are quite a number of technical problems that should not be discussed online only because the people who really need to hear about such problems go online to visit a limited number of websites or just to check email or make calls in Skype – and chances are they never ever happen to visit Techmeme or Digg. TV news sections or talk shows could really help increase awareness of the most important problems – those that deal with security – and I am certain that the editors should really pay attention to such issues simply because they make the online life more secure and given that more and more people get connected every day globally, this is one of the most important things to be taken care of.

17 Thousand dollars for a few online hours on the iPhone in roaming

Last week the blogosphere in Russia discussed yet another interesting topic on the famous Apple's device and a huge bill, to one of the participants about a local mobile operators for some international exuberance sent. And since the summer full of holidays abroad in full play is, the story got quickly a very hot, although there is nothing particularly special about it - nothing but the amount of concerned invoice: $17 thousand from a cell phone carrier for a vacation abroad.

The story includes a woman who had a corporate iPhone paid by your employer that used as their only phone and don't think twice to the use if to Egypt for a holiday with her son geleitet.Dort you spent her son about 4 hours mobile play on the device (really, kids love, everyone knows) led for GPRS on arrival receive a huge bill.

But because the phone was corporate and women was tried for a famous (and very wealthy) companies who manage, initiate a discussion with the institution trying to prove that the airline has enabled a service of the mobile roaming without knowledge of the Subscriber. It is a known fact that Russia mobile operators often their prices are abused and roaming is an example of what you also really do not worry, if abroad - buy, and wherever you may be a local SIM card.

Therefore the Subscriber was there the enormous amount not really surprise for many users who often come home with as much as minus $300 on your accounts after using some mobile Internet in the Ausland.Aber in this case has really little chances to win anything at all that the carrier has reminded everyone that on the iPhone you data in roaming in (the feature is disabled by default) must explicitly to activate so that this might not be, an inadvertent use of an unwanted feature - child playing games or whatever it.

So, now claims the carrier that the participants could probably not read the manuals for your iPhone and could simply do not know, that some applications could be on your iPhone connect to the Internet and Exchange data in the background mode - mobile without regard to how much traffic abroad kann.Und are we all once again reminded that read manuals and a habit - to really check the settings should be if you used a complex device such as an iPhone, BlackBerry, Android.

So while my initial reaction was to support the poor Subscriber accidentally has managed to lose $17 k doing something I can do easily in other countries, without knowing it could be expensive, it's now quite obvious again each gadget is nothing but a tool and the user is the only one responsible for uses such as the gadget wird.Und at least this ridiculous story taught us all in Russia one thing: iOS a setting for the exchange of data in General and when in roaming disable also now our mobile carriers actually describe users exactly how you should set phones avoid your smart to additional fees in roaming - and this is has been actually definitely an improvement, total draconian prices.

What people in rich countries know rare, information about the use of Internet in not exactly rich countries

These days it’s really hard to find a person who would not agree that internet has truly turned the world into a global and tightly connected place where everyone can easily talk to everyone without tons of efforts or financial investments. But I have frequently written here on Profy how different things can be about tons of tech aspects when one happens to live in Russia. Unfortunately I can’t say that these distinctions actually make Russia look any good at all – and recently I’ve had quite a number of personal experiences with internet usage here that I wanted to share, especially since I tend to suspect that the people who live in the countries that are better off (where the majority of my readers live) hardly have any idea of how things work in the countries that can’t be proud of any equal wellbeing and might find it interesting or at least feel better about what they already have if there’s something they are not totally happy about.

Honestly, recently I have had enough experiences with the internet to want to live elsewhere – despite of the fact that throughout my life I’ve always thought that I should stay and live where I was born (idea supported by the fact that my husband runs a business here that can hardly – if ever – be run from abroad). And I actually live in a country where we don’t have any censorship (visible at least) so I can easily use Wikipedia or Google or whatever other source of information I may need. That is, provided that I have enough internet and the speed allowed by my ISP will ever let me in.

The problem is that I spent at least 4 hours (!!!) over the last couple of weeks on the phone talking to support of my ISP about a peculiar issue I’m having – and still have not managed to fix it. I have changed 3 ISPs over the last year looking for a company that would actually allow me to access the World Wide Web at the speed they promise in their marketing materials – even if it will be more expensive than everything their competitors have to offer. As it’s probably clear to you already, my quest has not helped me find my perfect provider – hopefully yet.

The most usual problem with the ISPs here is that they stubbornly don’t want to maintain the speed you pay for. Say, I pay about $30 for 10MBPS a month (an average price for where I live). And do you think I get the promised 10? No, I actually get 12 and even more – but only for the first two weeks after I plug the cable of this specific ISP into my router. Now I know that all the ISPs have some thresholds that are rarely spoken about but will cut your speed until the end of the month once you reach this limit – but I do pay attention to these details and I am no heavy torrent user to even dream of reaching any such limit. Yet my speed drops after a few weeks and is never restored in the next month – so it definitely has nothing to do with me overusing their services. And sometimes it is as slow as .01MBPS which is virtually nothing for someone who works out of one’s home office, has a habit of buying music and movies online and sometimes wants to voice chat on Skype!

But I’m not exactly totally honest here: the speed can actually be restored. With some ISPs it takes a phone call to their support service and a few minutes explaining them you know how they have a habit of cutting channels and how you don’t pay for the best speed they can offer to never even get one tenth of what you pay for. The support agent will try to persuade you that they have nothing to do with the problem and the reason is most certainly your router (Wi-Fi arrangements at home are not very common here so they just love it when I mention that I have one because the router instantly turns into the only possible reason of the problem). And the very next day a real miracle happens and all of a sudden the promised speed returns – again for a few weeks when they think you won’t notice and cut your channel once again.

At some point it just gets too tiresome to handle and you switch the ISP to a new one – and after a while the story repeats again with the new ISP. The company I am subscribed to now has a long history in communications from the state-owned soviet past – and their practices has not changed much despite of the fact that they now provide a whole new range of services. Like the crazy thing they call internet access. And with them it is really totally crazy!

So after I got their cable into my router (it is to blame again, of course – or so their support agent is still trying to persuade me) I noticed an interesting thing: this time whenever I measure the speed, everything is absolutely fine and I get exactly what I pay for. So browsing is a real breeze and my emails arrive in no time and everything. With one huge exception: whenever I try to connect to some extremely busy server and grab a file of any significant size, my download will just freeze and never complete no matter how long I choose to wait for it to finish. And it happens to some things that I actually use quite a lot, like Windows Update (you know how Microsoft pushes out all those updates for Vista?) or Apple Store so buying a movie there is just out of question. In fact, I spent a whole day looking for an alternative source to download update to iOS4 from the previous version because the file just refused to be downloaded in iTunes.

First I thought about some temporary glitch or a problem in my system so I tried it in an office – and everything worked fine so I have come to the conclusion it is the ISP after all. I spent hours with them on the phone explaining the problem to one specialist after another and always getting a promise that they would call me back and never getting the promised call. And then I talked to an engineer who works in my husband’s company (that happens to be dealing with local ISPs a lot as they develop some software for them) and he explained that this specific ISP has a very interesting approach to speed: whenever they see huge amounts of traffic to some specific server, they just cut the capacity not to overload the link – and the subscribers will have to deal with the same problem that I have. So no matter how much you may want to keep your Vista safer by downloading constant security updates, chances are the ISP will never even let you do so!

Another situation that made me realize again that writing about internet from Russia and knowing exactly how it works in the US might be a little disappointing because you will hardly get what you expect here. We were spending a weekend at the countryside and had absolutely nothing to do so I decided to get some games from the App Store for my iPhone that we could play in pairs – like domino or monopoly or whatever.

When it comes to countryside somewhere in California, I suspect things must be different but in our case we spent another two hours browsing the store for the available games and buying them only to find out that the download would take me hours upon hours on my connection. Now don’t get me wrong, we do know what 3G is and it is available in many districts of the city of Novosibirsk where I live – but it is not something one should expect to find if you drive some 40 minutes from the downtown. And the available connection made me spend hours downloading the app I wanted.

Now this is hardly the worst thing to have – no one died because of my inability to download the apps any faster. But I quickly realized that for some countries it would have really been great if Apple added a simple feature to the App Store to indicate application size when you browse it from a mobile device so that users could realistically understand if they will be able to download it before they get to a Wi-Fi point. I know that Apple engineers in Cupertino simply don’t realize some users might need it but we actually do – because Internet is just not created equal in all the countries of the world!

How targeted are targeted ads of these days?

If a person knows anything at all about internet business, they certainly know that those numerous web sites they visit every day are mostly supported by advertising – those flashy banners that are everywhere these days. But since no one ever clicks those “You are one millionth visitor, click here for your prize” banners, everyone in the online business knows there’s one important thing about ads that actually makes them work: targeting.

It is simple: if you want to sell shoes in your San Francisco store, you will not want your ads to be visible to people somewhere in Texas because chances of them actually making a purchase from your store are very low (virtually non-existent given that they could only buy your shoes if they visit California for some reason and actually remember the ad and be motivated enough to go and buy the shoes). So most advertisers these days (especially those that sell some real-life goods or services) prefer to decide exactly what groups of users will be exposed to their ads.

Targeting for ads may vary depending on the location, age, gender, and other factors that are important for advertisers for any number of reasons. And since advertisers only want to pay to reach specific categories of users, it is just logical that advertising networks and independent online publishers follow and offer all types of targeting to their customers – and only serving ads to those people who fall into the target audience for the advertiser.

But sometimes targeting may be tricky and I have a feeling that there are quite a number of situations where advertisers pay for impressions that they would never pay for if they realized such impressions existed at all. My latest example is quite impressive because to me it sounds like a very large-scale waste of someone’s money.

You know, I am a huge fan of all the advantages of online music services where you are offered tons of radio stations of all the genres you can imagine and are allowed to listen to the music for free – on condition that you will listen to some ads on the road. In fact, I would gladly pay for such a service to be ad-free but for now I have not found the perfect combination of stations I’d really want to listen to AND the feature of actually being able to pay for any kind of premium account at all.

My several-months-old journey into the Apple App Store world accompanied by my iPod Touch has taught me quite a few things about the world of music that is monetized by ads that I thought could never exist. Like, I know perfectly well that the vast majority of well-known music services like Pandora will never allow international users to listen to their music for a mix of licensing and monetization reasons. Obviously, applications for such services are not available to download/buy from international App Store versions for the countries where users are not allowed to access such content.

But there are curious examples that are probably simply not telling the whole truth to their advertisers – and prefer to enjoy international audience accompanied by higher payments from advertisers who believe they pay for US users. The first such example is AccuRadio – a nice music service with an incredibly rich selection of stations, especially in my favorite category of smooth jazz, the genre that I happen to enjoy the most as a background when I work so the one that I listen to the most.

For some reasons I have no idea of, they do not restrict access of international users to their music and also serve English-language ads for services like TurboTax that international users will hardly ever have a chance of using. The only disadvantage of this service is that you can only listen to their music in a new browser window instead of using some media player that you already have. The reason is simple: in addition to audio ads, they also serve ads in this browser-based player but I hate having extra windows or tabs where I don’t need them, let alone in my browser – so I started looking for alternatives. And I easily found one in the US App Store (that I also happen to have an account for) – it was a dedicated AccuRadio application that I could use on my iPod to listen to my music over the home Wi-Fi network. Unfortunately after a while with any online radio you begin to notice too many repetitions of tracks – so it is no wonder that eventually I headed for some more services I could use for diversity.

And believe me, there was no lack of alternatives. Yahoo! Music does not allow you to listen to their music from your computer when they check your IP but if you use the iPhone application to do exactly that – the IP is probably not verified because I can listen to music all I want from Russia without doing any extra tricks. There are more such examples (I actually know of them) but I’d rather keep silence here for them not to implement IP checks in their protocols as they may turn into my favorite music services one day if the guys above fix the issues and I stay without two favorites – after all, I don’t want to be left without online music services altogether.

But the most important thing here is how it must look from an advertiser point of view should they ever discover such practices. They pay some amount of money for every user listening to their ad on this or that radio station – and they want the user to be able to interact with them, ideally buy their product or service. And what’s the point of paying for an ad for a product that a specific user will never have any desire to interact with because of one simple limitation: this product or service is simply not available in the country they live in? Honestly, this looks very much like cheating – intentional or not but still.

True, I am cheating a little here myself because these applications are not available to download in various country-specific App Stores dedicated for the countries where such applications should not work – and I use a US-based account for purchases in the App Store so I am easily allowed access in. But this is hardly very illegal given that I also use this account for purchases of equipment for my US-based company which happens to be a US taxpayer so I should probably be allowed to use iTunes as well.

There are similar examples in the fields other than online music but they are harder to find because – I suppose – they are much easier to check and verify for the advertisers. For example, a while back sitting here in Russia with a Russian IP address when surfing the web I frequently saw ads for Motorola Droid on various tech-focused websites and blogs – and this is pretty much surprising given that Droid is not available for purchase in Russia at all and I have no idea if it ever will be.

Now as a web publisher myself I can certainly understand those ad networks and publishers that are involved in such practices because they simply want more money for the audience they have – and if an advertiser does not have full access to the audience information, chances are they will easily pay based on the figures they are shown, no matter how far from truth they may be. Yet being a pathologically honest person myself, I have a feeling that this approach may be more or less risky because advertisers will find out sooner or later about what exactly they pay for – or some new technologies allow them to verify what they pay for and this may also end in a disaster.

So why not try to sell the audience you already have to your existing advertisers (maybe at a lower rate but they will at least have a chance of targeting your audience with actually targeted ads for those people who are not based in the US) or find new advertisers for your international audience who will consider such audience valuable enough to pay for. And cheating on an industry level can hardly be described as best practice, after all.
